MeitY & IIT Madras To Host Pre-Summit Event On Safe & Inclusive AI In Chennai
The
Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras, in collaboration with the
IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology
(MeitY), will host a key pre-summit event on 11 December in Chennai to advance
India’s push for safe, trusted and inclusive AI. The programme begins with a
formal inauguration on 10 December and includes a full-day convening and a
hybrid, closed-door Working Group meeting the following day.
The
meeting precedes the India–AI Impact Summit 2026, which will be held for the
first time in the Global South from 15–20 February 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New
Delhi.
The
pre-summit will bring together senior leaders, including Thiru TRB Rajaa,
Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce, Government of Tamil
Nadu; Kamakoti V, Director, IIT Madras; Sriraam Natarajan, Professor,
University of Texas, Dallas and Balaraman Ravindran, Professor and Head, WSAI,
IIT Madras, who also chairs the Safe and Trusted AI Working Group. Senior MeitY
officials, along with national and international experts from industry,
academia, civil society and government, are expected to participate.
Anchored
in India’s commitment to ethical and inclusive AI, the conclave will examine
how principles of AI safety and governance can be translated into practice at
scale. With AI systems increasingly embedded in public and private services,
concerns around fairness, accountability and misuse have intensified,
underscoring the need for frameworks that are enforceable and adaptable across
global contexts.
The Safe
and Trusted AI Working Group, led by Prof Ravindran, aims to strengthen an
ecosystem that prioritises transparency, reliability and public trust, ensuring
that innovation advances responsibly and benefits are distributed equitably.
Across
keynotes, expert panels and working sessions, the event will explore pathways
to establish an AI Safety Commons for the Global South, including shared
datasets, benchmarks and governance resources to support safe and reliable AI
development. Discussions will also focus on operationalising responsible AI
principles through practical regulatory and governance models suitable for
diverse cultural, legal and technological settings.
By
convening stakeholders across government, industry, academia and civil society,
the conclave seeks to build capacity and promote AI frameworks that are
globally interoperable but locally grounded. The insights generated will
directly shape the agenda, roadmap and outcomes of the India–AI Impact Summit
2026, strengthening India’s growing leadership in shaping a global AI ecosystem
rooted in trust, safety and inclusion.
