Zoom Phone Service Debuts in India

Zoom has officially launched its Zoom Phone service in India, expanding its suite of communication tools by introducing a cloud-based public switched telephone network (PSTN) service. This service allows businesses and users to make both inbound and outbound calls using regular phone numbers, seamlessly integrating traditional telephony with Zoom’s digital platform. Zoom Phone will use native India phone numbers, enabling users to make calls to landline and mobile numbers within India and internationally, depending on the chosen subscription plan.

The launch follows Zoom’s receipt of the Unified License with Access - All/Pan India and Long Distance from India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in April 2023. This license is essential for offering telecom services in India and ensures compliance with the country’s stringent regulatory requirements.

According to Velchamy Sankarlingam, President of Product and Engineering at Zoom, the service’s introduction aligns with India's Unified Telecom license requirements, which mandate local infrastructure to handle interconnections, thus ensuring Zoom’s cloud-based private branch exchange (PBX) service meets Indian regulations. PBX systems are traditionally used by businesses to manage multiple lines and internal communications, and Zoom Phone integrates this functionality into a cloud environment, offering features like call routing, voicemail, and call analytics.

Zoom’s foray into India’s telephony market could be a game-changer for enterprises and small businesses, providing an alternative to legacy phone systems, with the added convenience of Zoom’s established video conferencing ecosystem. This service is expected to benefit sectors that rely heavily on customer communication, such as customer support centers, remote teams, and telecommuting employees, by simplifying communication channels and reducing infrastructure costs.

With India being one of the fastest-growing digital markets globally, Zoom Phone’s entry may bolster the country’s shift towards cloud-based communication solutions, fostering more efficient and cost-effective business operations across sect
