Nxtra by Airtel, to Acquire 140,208 MWh of Renewable Energy for its Data Centers
Nxtra by Airtel, a
prominent data center company in India, disclosed a power-wheeling agreement
with Ampln and Amplus Energy to secure an additional 140,208 MWh of renewable
energy. This initiative further strengthens Nxtra’s existing pledge to annually
reduce its carbon footprint through renewable energy sources by approximately
99,547 metric tons of CO2 equivalent.
- Under
the terms of the agreement, AmpIn Energy and Amplus Energy will establish
captive solar and wind power plants, amounting to 48 MWdc and 24.3 MW,
respectively, to supply energy to Nxtra’s data centers located in Tamil
Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.
- These
agreements, spanning 25 years, align with Nxtra’s objective of reaching
its net-zero target by 2031 and reinforce its position as India’s leading
network of environmentally friendly data centers.
- In
addition to the aforementioned initiatives, Nxtra is implementing various
measures to achieve a 100% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions across its operations by FY2031. These efforts include
ramping up the adoption of green energy throughout its operations,
implementing energy-efficient infrastructure and processes, and
incorporating sustainable business practices at its workplaces.
The details of the
agreement :
- Tamil
Nadu: A power plant generating 24.3 MW from wind and 28 MWdc from solar,
resulting in 109,798 MWh of energy production annually, leading to an
estimated annual reduction of approximately 77,957 metric tons of CO2
equivalent.
- Uttar
Pradesh: Collaboration with AmpIn Energy Transition for a solar power
plant with a capacity of 12 MWdc, producing 17,880 MWh of energy annually,
contributing to an estimated annual carbon reduction of about 12,694
metric tons of CO2 equivalent.
- Odisha:
A solar power plant established in partnership with AmpIn Energy
Transition, generating 8 MWdc and producing 12,530 MWh of energy annually,
leading to an estimated annual carbon reduction of approximately 8,896
metric tons of CO2 equivalent.
Nxtra by Airtel boasts the largest network of data centers in India,
comprising 12 large and 120 edge data centers spread across the country. In the
upcoming years, it plans to invest over Rs 5000 crores to construct six new
hyperscale data centers in major metropolitan cities in India. This expansion
initiative aims to double its capacity to over 400 MW.
